You’ve Got A Friend: The Music of the Brill Building

Date:Monday February 6th
General Public$25
Season Ticket Holders:Complimentary*

Back by popular demand!

In the middle of New York City, in the heart of Times Square, sits The Brill Building.

From the halls and offices of 1619 Broadway came the sound of America in the 50s and 60s — considered by many to be the greatest music ever written. The Brill Building was home to Carole King, Neil Sedaka, Lieber & Stoller, Neil Diamond, and Barry Mann & Cynthia Weill among others. The songs they wrote changed the sound of popular music and became some of the most iconic songs of all time. “Breaking Up Is Hard to Do,””Where the Boys Are,””Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow,””You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feelin’” and “On Broadway” all came from the famed music factory. And the music didn’t stop there. The writers continued to climb the charts decades after their Brill days — but it was the building that brought them all together. Multi-award winning vocalist Scott Coulter takes you on a journey into the music — and the stories — of the singers and the songs that defined a generation.

For his work in cabaret, Scott Coulter was awarded both the 2001 Manhattan Association of Cabarets & Clubs (MAC) Award, as well as the 2001 Bistro Award for Outstanding Male Vocalist. He received a 1997 Bistro Award for the revue “Get Your Tickets Now!” and his debut solo show won the 1998 MAC Award for Male Debut. Time Out New York picked Coulter’s “Unexpected Songs” as one of the ‘Best of 1999’.

Coulter’s self-titled debut CD won the 2003 MAC Award for Outstanding Recording and was chosen as the best recording of the year by Scott and Barbara Siegel of Theatre Mania and Jeff Rosen of Cabaret Scenes magazine.

He won two 2007 Nightlife Awards including Outsanding Male Vocalist. Scott has appeared at Town Hall in the 1949, 1953, 1954, 1962, 1964, and 1968 editions of the popular “Broadway by the Year” series and can currently be heard on the Bayview recordings of the 1949, 1953 and 1962 performances. Other Town Hall appearances include “Sentimental Journey: The Songs of World War II,” “From Brooklyn to Hollywood,” “All That Jazz: A Tribute to Kander & Ebb,” and the critically acleaimed “Broadway Uplugged.” Since 1997, Scott has performed around the country with award-winning songwriting duo Marcy Heisler and Zina Goldrich in their many revues and tours, and with composer Stpehen Schwartz, Liz Callaway, and Debbie Gravitte in the revue “Stephen Schwartz & Friends.” Scott toured the U.S. as Jinx in Forever Plaid and was in the world premiere of Flloyd Collins, directed by Tina Landau at the American Music Theatre Festival.

His regional theatre credits include Into the Woods, In Trousers, Cotton Patch Gospel, Pump Boys and Dinettes, and As Bees in Honey Drown. He has directed many shows for the Town Hall in New York, and along with Michael Kerker and ASCAP, has produced Michael Feinstein’s Standard Time at Carnegie Hall. He is a graduate of the Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music.

Apollo Link: We Three Kings

Apollo Link is the perfect harmonic combination of three incredibly gifted and individually accomplished solo vocalists, Brandon Rubendall (Spider-Man, Anything Goes, Wicked), Adam Roberts (Spider-Man, Pippin) and Travis Kent (Disaster!). The trio met and began developing their unique sound while performing on Broadway in the web-slinging musical, Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark, which incidentally also inspired the group’s name. There, in the Foxwoods Theater’s acoustic hallways, they found their powerful pop-infused blend re-imagining everything from Broadway to classic holiday tunes to today’s top 40 hits. After accumulating over a million views on YouTube, they’ve infiltrated the internet, sold out major music venues, and captivated audiences all across the country. Tom Wopat: I’ve Got Your Number

A Tribute to the
Sunday November 27th
Season Ticket Holders: $30*
Tom_Wopat_2012_8x10 lo-res

2013 proved to be a banner year for Tom Wopat.  From the Feb. 12 release of his eighth recording I’ve Got Your Number, to his role in Quentin Tarrantino’s highly anticipated film Django Unchained,(released 2012 Christmas) and the release of the ABC –TV family musical movie Lovestruck, in which he stars with Jane Seymour.  While one can’t help recall his starring role in the ‘80’s hit television seriesThe Dukes of Hazzard, it is Tom Wopat, jazz vocalist and the Tony nominated star of Broadway that’s been garnering high critical acclaim for the last two decades.

With I’ve Got Your Number, Tom’s musical expedition has traveled into even more colorful territory. Backed by a thirty-piece orchestra, he fulfills his desire to focus on what he describes as the “orchestra/big band hybrid of the ‘60s and ‘70s.” “Like what Bobby Darin was doing,” he says.  “Frank Sinatra did big band then, too, everybody did.  And we really wanted to go for that — in the standards as well as the contemporary tunes.  We’ve evoked the spirit of the New York supper club era and the cool vibe of the Mad Men days. The recording swings hard and there’s a lot of really fine music.”

Simon & Garfunkel (800x800)

Relive one of the largest and most memorable concerts in history this season at The Engeman Theater with Live in Central Park (Revisited): Simon and Garfunkel. Vocalist Lee Lessack and singer-songwriter Johnny Rodgers bring the classic set list to life, revisiting the biggest hits of the greatest folk rock duo of all time. From “Sound of Silence” to “Mrs. Robinson,” Live in Central Park (Revisited): Simon and Garfunkel showcases two international vocal talents as they recreate the legendary, original 1981 reunion concert that brought Simon and Garfunkel back together again.

LFP_4568 copy (800x600)LEE LESSACK’s graceful lyric baritone vocals and sophisticated yet endearing persona have made him a shining star of the international concert scene. Billboard Magazine calls his singing, “Cabaret romanticism of a high order.” Touring extensively in the United States and Europe to sold-out performances and releasing five albums, Lessack has proven himself both as performer and recording artist.

Lee’s newest concert is titled CHANTEUR and is an homage to the Great French Songbook, celebrating music by Michel Legrand, Jacques Brel, Gilbert Bécaud and Charles Aznavour to name just a few. “Chanteur” also marks Lessack’s seventh recording and fourth solo album.   In addition to his solo concert appearances, Lessack also tours with critically acclaimed vocal trio, 3 MEN AND A BABY…GRAND!, and appears in concert with television favorite, Linda Purl (“The Office,” “Matlock,” “Happy Days”.)

His fifth and most ambitious recording to date, In Good Company, was released to great acclaim.   Intimate and impeccably produced, the album beams with outstanding performances. Featuring duets with music notables like Michael Feinstein, Maureen McGovern, Amanda McBroom, Ann Hampton Callaway and Stephen Schwartz, it has earned a MAC and Bistro Award for Best Recording of the Year.

Mr. Lessack, who attended the American Academy of Dramatic Arts, has also released four other critically acclaimed albums, including a live recording of a 2001 concert tour Too Marvelous For Words: The Songs of Johnny Mercer. “Too Marvelous,” recorded at the famed Cinegrill in the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel, was chosen for the preliminary ballot for 2002 Grammy Awards®.

Other recordings include Mr. Lessack’s self-titled debut solo album, his GLAMA Award®-winning, I Know You By Heart, the cast recording of An Enchanted Evening: The Music of Broadway, and a LIVE recording of his critically acclaimed vocal trio, 3 Men and a Baby…Grand Salute The Rat Pack.

A native of Philadelphia, Mr. Lessack makes his home in Los Angeles, where in 1996 he founded LML Music (www.LMLmusic.com), whose catalog of CDs includes over 100 of the country’s top live recording artists and performers.
